Error codes

This page covers how to troubleshoot HTTP errors returned from the Modular Cloud API. If any issue persists, contact us.

401 Unauthorized

A 401 response means the API couldn’t authenticate your request.

Cause	Solution
The API key expired	Create a new API key.
The organization is out of credits (which disables API keys)	Check your balance on the Billing page and add credits.
The API key doesn’t have access to the requested endpoint	Make sure you have model access enabled for the API you used for the request.
The `Authorization` header is missing	Add this header to your request: `Authorization: Bearer $MODULAR_API_KEY`

A 403 response means the request isn’t authorized for the resource or action.

Cause	Solution
The API key owner has insufficient permissions	Check if the key owner’s role has the necessary permissions to complete the request.

A 429 response means your organization has exceeded a rate limit.

Cause	Solution
You exceeded the organization’s RPM or TPM limit	Wait before retrying your request.
You exceeded the model-specific RPM or TPM limit	Wait before retrying your request or send the request to a different model endpoint.

If you’re consistently hitting limits:

New organizations can add a payment method to upgrade from Tier 1 to Tier 2 (increased rate limits).
If you need higher than Tier 2 limits, contact us about Enterprise plans.
